I am delighted to report that we had a fabulous afternoon at the charity polo event yesterday and I wold heartily recommend it next year : it helped that the sun shone throughout, as it would have been a completely different wet or cold weather experience . So as soon as we arrived, we spread out the rugs and ate the savoury half of our picnic, while getting our bearings. A polo ‘pitch’ is a large area, I guess to allow the horses room to stretch their strong legs!
There were interesting stalls to browse amongst, a free glass of champagne with the entrance ticket, good food available to buy and a fun raffle to enter with plenty of appealing prizes to win – our friend won an afternoon tea for two!! My only expectation of polo came wholly from the Richard Gere/Julia Roberts film ‘Pretty Woman’ and I did see some echoes of the film although the dress code was much more variable than that!
My husband and I both had our first polo lesson on the back of a wooden horse, which was fun and I was surprised at just how many goals I scored!
Joshua enjoyed the outdoor experience : he loves a picnic on a rug, he enjoyed the music through the loud speakers that made him jiggle in his wheelchair, he laughed to see his parents attempt polo and he ran off at one stage to look at the ‘mobile farm’ with its calf, goat kids, pigs and Angora rabbits! He also appreciated the opportunity to have a siesta on the rug.
We stayed at the event right until the end and found how well organised it was from start to finish. we topped off the perfect day out with the most delicious fish and chip supper on the way home, which Joshua gobbled up. It would certainly be a hard day to beat!
